Being a good tailor doesn’t automatically mean you’ll run a successful tailoring business.
You can sew beautifully and still lose money because of underpricing, poor customer management, wasted fabric, late deliveries, or accepting every job that comes your way.
Some mistakes are expensive. Others are frustrating. And some teach you lessons you never forget.
Here are a few common mistakes tailors make:
- Charging too little to get customers.
- Not calculating the real cost of fabric, labour, electricity, transport, and other expenses.
- Accepting too many jobs and struggling to meet deadlines.
- Starting work without collecting a deposit.
- Not writing down measurements and customer instructions properly.
- Spending business money as personal money.
- Failing to keep records of income and expenses.
- Ignoring customer complaints instead of learning from them.
- Buying materials without comparing prices or planning ahead.
- Trying to do everything alone instead of building systems or getting help.
The interesting thing is that many successful tailors didn't become successful because they never made mistakes. They made mistakes, learned from them, and changed how they worked.
